Our boy

We interrupted this family photo for a very tired little boy who was done with touring our local seminary. Kapaun is a very easy-going fella, but nap time is important to his functioning at full sweetness.  I wanted to take a picture of the kids and he walked to the side and simply turned his back on all of us.  It was so great.  He wouldn't budge.

Discerning his vocation, I guess.

Why was the picture his tipping point?  Why did he turn his back and stand perfectly still?  Who knows?  John and I sure thought it was funny.
I think we shut the van door and he turned his head and fell asleep.
Last month  was full of excitement and adventure.  We had four trips to the ER for three different kids.  Clairvaux hurt her arm while playing and wouldn't move it for several days.  We thought she broke it, but X-rays showed nothing.  After several days of a limp arm, we took her back again.  We took Lourdes in the middle of the night for croup and Kapaun fell off the back of the platform to our swing set. I was doing the morning dishes and watching them play up in the fort like they always do.  He was standing in the entry and I thought, "Man, he is going to flip off the back."  I literally turned my head and hear Clairvaux yelling to me that he fell of the back.  I sprinted out there.  He was doing the "I'm so hurt, I'm weak cry."   It broke my heart.  He wouldn't put any weight on his right leg.  I was worried about his head too.  I called our doctor to tell him what happened.  He sent me over to the ER.    Once again, X-rays showed nothing, but it still took several days for him to walk on it.  I took all three of them to our good chiropractor for adjustments.  He checked them out and made sure all was in line.  I will take about a three month nap to recover from that worry.

Crackers were offered to help settle the suffering patient.  He was milking every last drop of attention.
His mothers positioned the patient on the couch and set about the day caring for our invalid.  Everyone wanted a turn.  In the picture, they were reading one of his favorites to him while holding up the book just so.
We still can't believe he is a boy.  Really.  We say it everyday.  John and I make our rounds every night before bed.  We look at each child sleeping and usually say the same thing each night.  We have a voice we speak in about each child.  Kapaun's room is our last stop.  We lean over his crib and giggle about any antic performed that day.  He was so perfectly tailor made for our family.  What a good boy.
Above all his admirers, John dotes the most.

  1. Other than your "adventures" in the ER, everything about this post made me smile.

  2. I just read a very old post of yours about having a large family. Very encouraging. I am currently a "trad cat" mother of four married to a wonderful man. We are both from "limited" sized families, though our parents now see us open to however many or few God wishes to send. If my mom could go back, I know she would have had more. Anyways, I finally settled in more with my fourth little one; 7 months old. He is adorable and I just want to eat him up everyday. He has an intense and affectionate 2 1/2 year old sister who wishes she was the mom. :-) I want to say thanks for your blog. I hope you and your "viliage" ;-) have a fruitful Advent and a joy filled Christmas Season! St. Barbara, Pray for us! ~ The Mrs. p.s. if you have time, check out this other Catholic family's blog. I don't know them personally. http://ponderedinmyheart.typepad.com/

  3. This was such a sweet post. That Kapaun is just the cutest little guy and his haircut is a dream. I love it. I also hope you get an Advent and Christmas season free of the ER!

    1. Oh yes. Thank you. I specifically told the barber I wanted a 1920s prohibition cut/undercut with a hard part. Probably a bit much for a 2-year-old, but it was kind of fun asking for it.

  5. First off, Clairvaux in that first picture cracks me up!
Second, if this third one is a boy, I'll be re-reading your posts about your boys. For whatever reason, I'm terrified of having a boy. Which is funny because before I had kids all I wanted was boys. I know my heart will grow in ways I didn't know possible and I'm scared for it to do that, for some reason!

    1. CONGRATULATIONS!!!! If I've not told you already. I was just thinking of you and your newest the other day and thought to myself how I need to write and celebrate!!!! I can't help but think to myself when I hear about little boys and their wildness that "Man, you should experience the drama of a bunch of girls" as our boys are E.A.S.Y. going and let's just say some of girls provide a lot more festivities. I think it's not so much a matter of gender, but the child's God-given temperament. So, be at peace. Our boys have been utterly delightful.

    2. Although, secretly and selfishly I want girls every time as I know they stay close to home (it seems) as they get older. 100% pure selfish motive on that one. I admit it. :)

  6. Kim ^, boys are awesome. Easier than girls in some ways, but their energy is a little much to deal with at times. No one treats Mama more sweetly than little boy, though.

Lindsay, Kapuan is just too much! What a heartbreaker. My little Samuel (aka Samuel Mu, Mu-Sam, Samcake the Pancake, etc.) is about the same age and is likewise ridiculously adorable. I wish we could get the two of them together, but it might be cute little boy overload. Sam's eyes are like the brown version of Kapuan's. Your barber does a better job than I do on wiggly little boys; that haircut is the icing on the little chub cake. :) I am so glad you are enjoying your boy. They are amazing little people. Also, Clairvaux's poses cracked me up.

Sorry to hear about all those stressful ER visits, but very glad that nothing turned out to be serious.
