A legacy of motherhood

“How can it be a large career to tell other people's children about the Rule of Three, and a small career to tell one's own children about the universe?
How can it be broad to be the same thing to everyone, and narrow to be everything to someone? No. A woman's function is laborious, but because it is gigantic, not because it is minute. I will pity Mrs. Jones for the hugeness of her task; I will never pity her for its smallness.”

G.K. Chesterton
8 BIG months.
I asked my resident photographer, Clairvaux, to take pictures while I was making dinner yesterday.  Our lives are a conglomeration of routine tasks.  I generally do the same things everyday. Although, I always find it so beautiful that if I did NOT do those same 2,000 things each day, so much of our daily lives would be lacking and wanting.

How important it is for them to eat.  I was told that 75% of the daily happenings occur in the kitchen.  That is about true for our lives.  What a beautiful gift food is to a family. What a silent sacrifice it is to produce that gift each day.  I had her take a picture this particular day as Kapaun was wanting to be right next to me, Vianney was telling about all the tales she has been reading since the literary world has exploded for her, not pictured was Damaris wanting a snack.  I was there buzzing along, listening to Vianney, kissing Kapaun, preparing a meal for ten.  How can this work not be deemed so very important!

Barely pictured, Vianney telling me about all her stories.  If I wasn't here, who would listen to her stories and make her feel important.
Who would hold the koala bear?

We do all of this because we love you.  We want you to know how loved, wanted, and cared for you are and were!  I cannot help but think of John 15: "Greater love has no one than this, to lay down one's life for another."

  1. Thank you for this beautiful reflection...I often find myself overwhelmed with the meal preparation process and actually doing a little mental happy dance once dinner is placed in the oven or groovin' in the crockpot...thank you for reminding my what a gift it is to be able to provide my family with these meals...and that I am able to be the one home preparing them. -Alexis Bailey-

  2. Thank you for always posting such beautiful reminders on the importance of our daily tasks. This post is just that reminder to me. You are so right! And like your family, ours spends so much time in the kitchen. I enjoy cooking and feeding them, but it can sure seem daunting some days. And all the other "every single day" jobs that must be done can really make me feel bogged down at times. I really respect and enjoy your insights.

  3. Thank you for such an encouraging post-as a mom of 14 I can relate. I was wondering what brand front pack you are using? I have a 2 week old newborn and was looking for one that is more comfortable-do you like the one you are using? Thank you.

  7. I'm so grateful that God gave me the grace to see the supernatural importance of motherhood as the highest career a woman can be called on to have. Any woman can give birth but few woman understand the grave responsibility and privilege it is to form and nurture a human soul. Joseph cardinal mindszenty said" what on Gods good earth is more glorious than this: to be a mother. My dear mother taught me the high calling of motherhood. It sounds like your mother taught you that lesson too. You are a-mazing Anne Shirley

  8. It must be fun to create new memories in the new kitchen too. I thought once we moved, and got a bigger kitchen, the kids wouldn't literally be under my feet during dinner prep. Haha, nope. Still wearing the one year old, and stepping over the others. It should be a sport!
