I remember watching baby Vianney come back from getting the mail once. She was toddling along and mouthing over and over again "Baby." She was just starting to talk and I could see her from the window saying it over and over again. Her big eyes were bursting with excitement and a look that said, "I need to show Mama." In her little fat hand was a picture of a baby crawling on fresh carpet advertising this new company's carpet cleaning services. It touched my heart so much how excited she was to show me the baby. I kept that postcard as those moments make me tear up when thinking about how innocent children are. Her little feet were going so fast. She was on a mission to show me.
On this particular day, the shrieking and excitement reached new levels. I mean over the years I've heard some pretty good shrieks. American Girl magazine and LEGO magazine have the same affect Christmas morning offers. They cut each girl out of the American Girl catalog and play paper dolls for DAYS, maybe even weeks. It lasts FOREVER and is intense.
I was nursing Lourdes on the opposing couch and was dying at their audible gasps at the turn of each page. We received in the mail a copy of Chasing Fireflies magazine. I've never heard of it, but the costumes were like nothing I've ever seen. Let the dreaming begin. I am sure the neighbors heard the commotion as each page offered hours of plays and productions. It was sweet to watch. I love letting them dream.

Lindsay, Janey and I have received this magazine a couple times in the last month, and she has me sit on the couch and "read" it to her-she chooses her favorite on each page and then tells me which ones are "scary" (everyone that has a mask). It's always a race to get the mail at our house also, and the best day with either Lego/AG.

ReplyDeleteI adore this!! We got the same magazine last week. My children haven't seen it yet....but I know they'd have the stunned and excited reactions. I love the way you love your children.
ReplyDeleteThe same *catalog*, that is! I keep wondering if it will induce my children to ask for costumes...I always make ours out of crazy around-the-house stuff. It would spark their imaginations for sure!
DeleteThis brought back memories! I would come home from school, check the mail, and read any interesting catalogs while eating a snack. American Girl and Magic Cabin were my favorites. My sister and I spent hours poring over these catalogs and counting our coins to determine which treasures we could afford. We never bought anything, but it was fun to dream! I love your blog and how you capture the sweetness of childhood! Praying for your intentions.
ReplyDeleteChasing Fireflis is the stuff dreams are made of for little girls! mine love looking at the unique and sparkly pictures! I don't remember loving the mail the way that my kids do. Such a sweet story- I love the pics of their heads huddled together.
ReplyDeleteWe got this for the first time last week, also! It's still on the book shelf because the kids all pull it out often. (It's right next to our Lego magazines and American Girl catalogs as well :). My kids had seen one other, when the boys across the street brought them a copy they'd gotten, but it had had mostly normal (beautiful) clothes, with a small section of costumes. The ALL COSTUME catalog is like heaven on earth to my girls! So fun.
ReplyDeleteLindsey, how do you handle the "I wants!"? It seems like anytime we are in a store or they see something they like there is an immediate "I want this! Can I have it?" It makes me worry about for when we actually start getting magazines like that in the mail!
